TechnoGeek

I admit it, I am, completely, an aspiring Techno-geek, Techno-nerd, Techno-aholic! I say "Aspiring" because the term "technogeek" according to the Wiki is one who "successfully" keeps up with emerging technologies and there is NO WAY to know every technology that is emerging, unless you're a genius, which I, admittedly, am not! LOL

Technology is the cornerstone of the advancement of our species here on earth. It makes our lives easier AND harder. It makes us adaptable to change. It helps us in our every day lives and makes our lives more efficient. But do we really appreciate the technology that helps us in our daily lives? I believe some do and some don't. Some embrace the change (and yes mom, I'm so proud of you at 70 embracing all the technology you have learned!!) and some buck against the technology and belittle it because, I believe, they are either afraid of it or don't care to take the time to learn it, period! Of course its my blog and my opinion! :-)

Television, Computers, Dishwashers, Video Games, Stoves, Microwaves, Automobiles, Telephones (both Mobile and land-line), Washers and Dryers, Stereo, Radio and the list goes on and on and on. 15 years ago the technology for cell phones was immature, now we have iPhone and Android, basically a computer in our pockets, how cool is that?

My science fiction toy and action figure collection is one that many people are amazed at when they see it. Why do you have these, they ask. To me, they are the epitome of what can be, what will be, what may be and what shall be in the future, maybe even the near future. It makes me think about all the things that have been and the things that we have now and helps me to dream about the things that I can only hope to see in my lifetime!

I believe that the genre of science fiction has pushed the scientific community and invention forward by leaps and bounds. In the 60's, Star Trek had talking computers (the voice done by the late, great Majel Barrett Roddenberry of course!), the PADD (short for Personal Access Display Devices) was a preamble to the modern iPhones and Android versions we have today, not to mention the Palm of yesterday. All of the actual devices on the ships in Star Trek were touchscreen, now everything in our technological advances is going with touchscreen technology! Do inventors and scientists look at science fiction and then say, "wow, I could do that if only...?" I truly believe the answer is YES! I believe that the visionaries of Science Fiction have given those who "can" the ideas to push us forward, to think and grow and to bring technology further along then ever before. I believe those that "can't" dream big and build their ideas into the science fiction/Futuristic/Fantasy genres and then those that "can" see them and make them happen. Just my opinion...but history does put forth some really good examples to back my opinion. Just saying...:-)

What about the big E3 convention every year? Magnificent!!! Gadget Pron on G4tv.com gives you info on all the newest technology that is out! And does it with a great sense of humor as well...

And how long will it be before we do have matter transporters? Or do we already have working prototypes and they are being tested in secret, unidentified government facilities? When will we have a "Selma"? For those of you that did NOT watch the wonderful science fiction show "Time Trax", Selma (Specified Encapsulated Limitless Memory Archive) was Darian Lambert's computer Hologram disguised as an AT&T Credit Card, how cool was that? A holographic computer the size of a credit card at his fingertips to give him information anytime, so awesome!

When will we have Hoverboards? Actually, I believe there is a company (Future Horizons) who actually makes real Hoverboards and they actually work (although I have never seen or ridden one, those are the claims), did you know? Do you know who David Hamel is and the strides he had made in antigravity propulsion in his lifetime? Do you know who Royal Raymond Rife is and his invention of the 'Rife Universal Microscope'? He was wildly popular until people were paid to lie about the viability of his inventions and the AMA sure doesn't want you to learn about it, but the info is out there if you want to learn about it!

The new technology laptops and monitors to come out will be with 3D technology in the very near future, they're already being designed. What about the new electrohydrodynamic (EHD)-based thermal control technology developed and unveiled last month by NASA? How cool (pun intended) is this?

Reading my Science Illustrated or Popular Science gives me insight into the really cool new technology and "possible" technology for the future and, possibly, tomorrow. Did you know that for ~$13,000, there are some eye conditions that can be treated with a bionic implant? YES there is and it is totally cool! It is called the "Eyeborg"! Or if that doesn't work, they have an implantable bionic eye, OMG how awesome!!! (Very "Bionic Woman" from the 70's TV show, huh? Nope - she had a bionic ear, how about the Six Million Dollar Man? Yup? He had a Bionic EYE! Another example?) What about 3D without the glasses? Or the "Supertrain Rocket" that will go from LA to New York in 41 minutes! Amazing and I can't wait to see them! I only hope all this technology happens in my lifetime!

Is it any wonder that I chose technology as my career? Loving every day I learn some of the new technologies that can simplify my life and advance my education! You can never learn enough, that's for sure and with everything portable now, learning is a whole new ballgame! Is it any wonder why I volunteer for new projects and embrace all the new ideas available for today and tomorrow at work, just to learn what's out there and how to use it? Sometimes I think I eat, drink and sleep technology, but it really is only because I love it so much! I find myself wondering how I would live without my Widgets! Every morning seeing the expected temp outside without having to open the door! Seeing my Facebook Widget to see if any one of my friends posted, or the Text widget to see if any new texts arrived, or my Gmail chat widget...OMG! I think I need a vacation...

And I will take my tech with me :-)...

  1. I agree 100% with your take on where technology touches our lives and how impossible it is for any one person to master the whole of it. Too many people regard themselves as experts of it all, and it's those opinions that reside on shaky ground.

However, I am ill-equipped to comment on the science fiction aspects of it all. I'm afraid the Jetsons are the limit of my interest in sci-fi. Be sure to wake me when THAT kind of technology becomes available!

  2. I have zero techno-geek aspirations or ability... you go girl!

  3. No techno aspirations here, either. I want to be able to operate my laptop and my iPhone...other than that? I'm hopeless.
